Personal Studio Space

Sunday, April 18th, 2010

It’s pretty common in the creative field to have a personalized work environment to assist in filling the creative juices. I’ve been working a lot for the last few months to create such a space for myself since I moved back to Northeast Ohio. I figured I’d share some photos of my personal studio office. All of the printed pieces which are on the walls are work that I have done, but the packrat in me definitely shows in the way that all empty space on the shelves is covered in either books, or pretty things that are visually compelling to me. The most recent addition is the portable record player. I’ve stuck to only buying the “dead format,” but with the workload I haven’t spent time out of the studio, so my 1500+ records weren’t getting enough play time. Additionally, keep checking in, as I should have a good amount of new work to show this week and next.

Akira Kurosawa

Tuesday, March 23rd, 2010

Today, the great Japanese filmmaker, Akira Kurosawa would have been one hundred years old. He directed 30 films and is widely regarded as one of the most influential filmmakers in film history. His Ikuru and Seven Samarai (just two name a couple) are two of the finest films I have ever seen. I had to make a post for him today. In celebration of his Centennial, The Criterion Collection is releasing “AK 100: 25 Films of Akira Kurosawa;” a box set of 25 of his finest films (at a gawking $300+) with amazing packaging.

Lori Goldston

Sunday, July 5th, 2009

The other night, I went to this event with a handful of friends. As I mentioned a few months back, The Passion of Joan of Arc is one of my favorite films. I’ve developed an obsession for Dreyer’s work. This event displayed the film as it was meant to be viewed, via a Reel, completele with it’s amazing authentic aging and textures. The cinematography within is incredible. But the real kicker for this event is that it featured a live score, by cellist Lori Goldston. There was a point in the ending climax scene, when Lori was tearing it up, and Kris and I exchanged one of those “holy crap” grins. It was incredible. Lori also has done some work with Mirah, awesome.

Lastly, I want to note that I was on the road for a week, then had a great friend visiting PGH. I plan to be better about keeping posts coming. It’s hard being busy.

Efterklang at B-Side Lounge

Sunday, April 5th, 2009

Last night we went up to Cleveland’s B-Side Lounge to see Efterklang. I’ve been freaking out over “Parades” since it came out in 2007, and finally got to see them. Despite a set cut short (by Agnostic Front, playing the Grog Shop, directly above us) and friends Trouble Books being cut from the bill, I really loved watching them. And they turned to know some good mutual friends, despite being based out of Iceland; super nice fellows. I snapped a few photos with my Holga, with some new (expired) color film that I just got in this week. I tried to get them developed today, but the color lab was closed. Here’s two videos of my two favorite tracks from Parades, and their hilarious North American tour poster.

Blindman’s Bluff.

I found this online a few months ago. It is the original image that inspired the Sigur Rós Sleepwalker image. Above is the original image by John Yang, and the “stencil” adaptation for Sigur Rós’ ( ) album. I love this image, band and album so much that it holds a permanent spot on my leg.
