Josh Ritter & the Royal City Band just departed this week on a summer tour in support of his new record, Sermon on the Rocks. When the record was announced, pre-order packages included a felt pennant I designed, inspired by the song Cumberland. The design is a throwback to old americana souvenir pennants like you'd find these days in an antique store. The lyrics mention copperheads, so I took that cue to include a snake in the illustration. Each pennant is hand-printed on soft felt by the nice folks at Oxford Pennant. Gee a show to get one, or purchase one right now in Josh's online store. Stream the entire record, Sermon on the Rocks, below via Spotify.
This Friday in Akron, legendary Akron band The Party of Helicopters will be playing a reunion-of-sorts at Thursday's Lounge. Also performing are Ghostman & Sandman, Ultrasphinx and Jon Finley (of Beaten Awake, Drummer, The Man I Fell in Love With fame). I couldn't pass up the opportunity to make a poster for this show! It's only a few days before Halloween, so the image is a mysterious haunted-house-esque cityscape in a classic spooky color scheme. Limited to only 100 copies, and printed on French's limited-edition Vivitone Plum Punch paper! First available at the show, I'll have some for sale online on Saturday.
It's been months since i've posted an update with a bunch of recent apparel design. Here, I've gathered a selection of approved merch since my last post in March, including work for Ben Rector, Watkins Family Hour, Ingrid Michaelson, Hawthorne Heights, David Wax Museum, Being as an Ocean and Rocky Votolato. Fall touring season has been swiftly ramping up, so stay tuned for more merch design in the next couple of months.
My newest gig-poster is a series of spooky illustrations for Run for Cover Records' CMJ Showcase, which is happening tomorrow night in Brooklyn. Every year, the poster art is halloween themed because the event takes place in October. This year the showcase featured a solid lineup of artists; Pity Sex, Makthaverskan, Crying, Teen Suicide, LVL UP, Petal, Spencer Radcliffe and Pinegrove. As always, I'll have a small number of prints available in my online store, the morning after the show.
Tomorrow night,Mayday Parade will have a new poster of mine for their show in Sayreville, NJ as part of the AP Tour presented by Hot Topic. The design was inspired by the retracted-style imagery from their new record, Black Lines, and also incorporates lyrics from their song Jersey. Three-colors, screen-printed on French's speckletone paper. They'll be first available at the show, and I'll have a small number of copies available on Saturday, in my online store.
My buds in Walk the Moon have been a non-stop touring machine this year, in support of their record Talking is Hard. I'd honestly be surprised if you haven't heard Shut Up + Dance a few times, even if you aren't familiar with the band. With that, we've been unleashing a slew of merchandise over the last few months, and here's the latest lineup. We've got a bunch of tees, a hoodie, and even a custom cut-and-sew hat with an embroidered patch! Go see them on tour to find these items and more. Click all of the images to view larger. *EquALLity tee was designed by the always awesome Jason Matheny.
My latest gig-poster is for the fantastic up-and-coming soul singer/songwriter Leon Bridges. These prints were created to commemorate this weeks concerts in New Orleans, Nashville & Atlanta, plus his secret-after-show at Austin City Limits this past Saturday. The illustration was inspired by “River” the closing song from his record Coming Home. Considering these shows are in southern states, I thought it would be fun to illustrate a swampy scene like you would find in Louisiana. The prints are three-color screen-printed on heavyweight French Olive paper, in an edition of 185 copies. I'll have a small amount of posters available on Thursday in my online store.
As part of this year's London Design Festival, the folks at Clinic will be displaying some of my work as part of Gig Poster Power. For the show, they'll be showcasing "the best gig posters, past and present, celebrating Clinic’s long association with the record industry and asking some important questions about the future of design in music. In the shadow of the demon download there’s still hope for design in music, Clinic asks ‘is there room for the tangible in the world of digital?'"Gig Poster Powerwill be at Clinic 21-25 September from 10am-4pm. To find out more about the exhibition visit our London Design Festival event page here.
I'll be in Cincinnati tomorrow with mewithoutYou, selling these posters I've made to commemorate their show at Southgate House Revival with Foxing & Field Mouse. The posters illustrate details from the song Red Cow, including apparition eyes, the cornhusk dawn, and the obvious cow. I've included the song below. The posters are printed on heavyweight French Steel Grey 100wt paper, four-colors and limited edition. If you can't make it to the show, you can buy a poster on Thursday, right here in my online store.

The show will run from July 10 through August 16, with the opening reception happening on July 10th, from 5-8 pm. Click here to RSVP on Facebook. In conjunction with The Wild Ones, Square Records will also host an off-shoot show, which we're calling No Comply: The Art of Skateboard Culture. This is a group show is with my friends Phil Guy (aka Burrito Breath) and Jesse Strother.
