Tomorrow night in Dayton, Ohio, David Gray & Amos Lee will be performing at the Music Center at the Heights. To commemorate the concert the tour merchandise director (and all around great friend, Brian Stowell) hired me to design & print this silk-screened gig-poster. The prints are 19" x 25" three-color screen-prints on heavyweight French Yellow Light paper. They'll be first available at the concert, and a small amount will be available online in my store.
Tonight, mewithoutYou will begin their summer tour in support of their new album, Pale Horses. This time around, the band wanted to stylize their new tour merchandise differently from the last several years. For this touring cycle, I worked with Vasily Kafanov's illustrations that were used in the album artwork, clipping, re-arranging, and coloring them to function as shirt designs. I also put together a new original--which we've dubbed pattern sun--and they'll also be re-printing my floral designs from the last few months. Go see them on tour and grab a shirt!
Tonight in Cleveland, Cozy Up Collective is celebrating the opening of their third group art-show at Native. The theme for this show was yellow so I gladly submitted the poster that Nick & I did for Cloud Nothings last year. Our poster is on display alongside work by Haypeep, Erin Guido, Matthew Labyk, Rachel Katstaller, Justin Will, Aniek Bartels, Trevor Marzella, Danielle Klim, Mai Ly Degnan, Amber Esner, Katie Parland, Phoebe Thomas, Nancy Mungcal, Chris Corsi, Carly Bartel, Josh Chance, Juliette Crosson, Michelle Lo, Christopher Darling, Cara Mullinary, Philip Morgan, Burrito Breath & S. Jordan Fine. Also check out this cool mini-zine that Justin Michael Will made specially for the show! The show will run through June 30th, 2015. Gallery hours are Tuesday – Saturday 12-8 pm and Sunday 12-6 pm. Unfortunately, I won't be able to attend the opening event, but I look forward to visiting the show sometime next week!
The touring machine that is Dave Matthews Band are starting their summer tour tonight in Austin, Texas. A few months ago, their merchandise team approached me about putting together a few concepts for their tour, and this floral design was selected for a girls tee! I even managed to subtly fit their classic fire-dancer logo in there. If you go see them on the summer tour, be sure to check out their merch booth, or you can purchase one online right here.
The May/June issue of Communication Arts is this year's Illustration Annual and it proudly includes the poster that Nick Spolarich & I made for Cloud Nothings 2014 Fall Tour. This was my first attempt at entering into a CA competition, and I was thrilled when I was notified that this project was accepted into the magazine.
Pale Horses is the title of mewithoutYou's highly anticipated sixth album, which will be released on June 16th by Run for Cover Records. As always, the record's artwork is centered around a series of illustrations by Vasily Kafanov, with imagery and tones that echo the gritty, darker themes of the music. I worked directly alongside the band's singer Aaron Weiss, and manager Mike Almquist, to design & lay out the packaging for the record. The pre-orders just launched at midnight last night, and you can order a standard edition LP, CD or cassette from Run For Cover Records. Or, for the collectors is a Limited Deluxe 2xLP + 2 CD Edition which comes packaged in an intricately die-cut triple-gatefold jacket. It also includes a poster, lyric booklet, and postcard set of additional artwork from Vasily. As proud as I've always been to collaborate with this group of individuals, the songs on this record are unlike any of theirs before. I think their loyal fanbase will be very excited to hear nods to the band's earlier records, but also Aaron's lyrics reaching a new, unchained individuality. I've included the album's teaser video below the product mockups.
Last Tuesday marked the official release of Rocky Votolato's new album Hospital Handshakes, and I just recently got a shipment of records courtesy of the nice folks over at No Sleep. I was responsible for the packaging design for the record, which is centered around a series of photographs that document the recording process in Chris Walla's Hall of Justice Studio. All photos, including these product-shots were all taken by Amber Zbitnoff. Really happy with how this one came out! The US vinyl colors perfectly compliment the album packaging, and I'm excited to see the European version from Glitterhouse.
Walk the Moon is currently out on the spring leg of their Talking is Hard Tour, and they've commissioned artists to create a different screen-printed poster for each stop on the tour. Having designed a lot of their tour merch over the years, I took the opportunity to make posters for all three shows in Ohio, which start tonight in Cincinnati. The Cincinnati print is four colors, while the Columbus and Cleveland ones are three. Each print will be available at the merch table for their respective shows, 100 copies available each night. I've reserved a small amount of copies for my online store, which will go on sale at a random time on Friday, April 4th.
2015 kicked off with a blazing start, and that's why this blog hasn't seen many updates with band merch I've been working on. This post includes all of the apparel design I've had approved in the first quarter of 2015, including work for Alabama Shakes, Circa Survive, The Menzingers, Walk the Moon* (pillowcases!), NEEDTOBREATHE, Mat Kearney, Gates, Cloudkicker, Prawn, Cary Brothers, and a even a onesie for David Wax Museum's Suz Slezak. I've already got some amazing clients lined up for April, and hoping this year continues to be awesome! *Walk the Moon designs were a collaboration with the awesome Jason Matheny.
Next month I'll be having a new show on display at Square Records in Akron. We planned this show to correspond with Record Store Day on April 18th, and the show will go on display the day before. I'll likely have some out-of-print posters from my archives, and also some artist-proofs available for purchase. If you're out record shopping in Northeast Ohio, please take a look!
